Periodontal Treatment

Did you know there's an easy and affordable way to maintain healthy teeth and gums? It starts with conscientious brushing and flossing at home and visiting your dentist every six months for teeth cleanings and exams.

When we see you routinely, we can detect cavities and gum disease and treat them in their earliest stages. Early treatment is optimal for your oral health and can prevent the need for more complex and costly services like crowns and root canals.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Before & after treatment from one of our talented hygienists.

Periodontal disease occurs when plaque and tartar buildup causes an infection that irritates gum tissue. Common symptoms of gum disease are:

  • Red, inflamed, or swollen gums
  • Gums that bleed when you brush and floss
  • A change in the way your teeth feel when you bite down
  • Gum recession and spaces between teeth and gums
  • Bad breath that you can't get rid of with mouthwash
  • Teeth that feel loose to the touch

Without treatment, pockets open between the teeth and gums where bacteria collect and cause an infection. The infection gradually attacks bones and ligaments that hold teeth in place, loosening them and eventually causing tooth loss. Many people don't realize that the leading cause of adult tooth loss is periodontal disease.

Tooth loss is bad enough, but there’s even more reason to take steps to prevent gum disease. Your mouth is the gateway to your body. Researchers have found a link between chronic gum disease and health problems such as heart and lung disease, stroke, certain cancers, dementia, and pregnancy complications.

Types of Periodontal Treatment We Offer

Everyone has unique periodontal needs, so our experienced hygienists tailor treatment accordingly.

Routine Preventive Cleanings

Regular preventive cleanings every six months involve removing bacteria-filled plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces. Our wonderful hygienists are friendly and caring and will ensure that your visit is comfortable and you leave us with a gleaming fresh smile.

Maintaining a fresh smile between professional cleanings is crucial, so we also make home-care recommendations and show you how to brush and floss correctly. We can also recommend oral hygiene products to floss around dental work to ensure your entire mouth is fresh and clean.

Periodontal Deep Cleaning

If it has been a long time since your last cleaning and we detect advanced gum disease called periodontitis, our hygienist may recommend a deep cleaning.

Also called scaling and root planing (SRP), our hygienist removes plaque and tartar from teeth and their root surfaces to slow the progression of gum disease. Scaling removes plaque and tartar above and below the gumline. Planing smooths root surfaces to eliminate places where bacteria can hide and promotes healthy reattachment of gum tissue.

A deep periodontal cleaning is completed over two appointments, so our hygienist can focus on one half of the mouth at a time.

After SRP, we will resume traditional or preventive cleanings at more frequent intervals to maintain your gum health.
